SMELLS of coconut and satay wafted from Cranbourne Primary School last Thursday.
The enticing scents were part of the school’s Indonesian Day, in which students participated in Indonesian dance, played traditional games, made kites and baskets, and cooked up a storm.
The day coincided with the statewide Cultural Diversity Week, which ran from 17 to 23 March.
Indonesian Day coordinator Mary Chen said students had an entertaining day, improving their cultural understanding and gaining first-hand experience of Indonesian cultures.
Students made an Indonesian traditional snack, pan cakes with coconut filling, played Indonesian village games and participated in activities such as making hats, making and flying kites and making batik baskets.
Ms Chen said the day was a full dress-up day with an Indonesian lunch of satay chicken and rice on the menu for students.
“In the afternoon there was a cultural performance by the students on the dances they learnt earlier on the day,” she said.
