More dinners on the menu

CRANBOURNE’S new community kitchen has set off on a roll with the second announced for later this month.
After the successful turnout of Cranbourne’s first ‘soup kitchen’ on 13 August, volunteer group The Singh Family, which runs and provides meals at a number of kitchens around Melbourne, has agreed to run another dinner on Tuesday, 26 September.
Mayfield Ward councillor Steve Beardon said the kitchen could seat as many as 80 people in need at one time.
“Last time we had guests come from as far away as Hampton Park, and further,” Cr Beardon said. “We have the supplies if we were inundated.”
A choice of two roasts will be served up by Cranbourne MP Jude Perera, Casey Café owner Phil Sealey, William Angliss Institute hospitality students, the Reverend Paul Creasey, Cr Beardon and volunteers from across Cranbourne.
Free ice cream will also be available for the kids.
“Last month we served over 50 meals to families and residents who were a little short on cash or, through no fault of their own, just needed a friendly place to visit, sit and talk and share a few yarns over a coffee and a bite to eat,” Cr Beardon said.
He said the initiative had been well supported locally, with students from Cranbourne Secondary College, the Cranbourne Information Support Service and the Cranbourne Netball Club offering their time last month as well.
“I am so pleased to be able to help and so very proud to be a member of our community who have rallied behind this initiative with so many offers of help,” Cr Beardon said.
The dinner will be held between 5.30pm and 7pm at the Casey Café at 65 Berwick-Cranbourne Road, Cranbourne.
