Disabled to set sail at lake

CASEY, Cardinia and the City of Greater Dandenong and Leisure Link Up are seeking people with either sailing experience or an interest in learning to sail.
The volunteers would help establish a sailing program for people with a disability, based at Lysterfield Lake.
Casey manager of arts and leisure, Robyn Bowen, said the Sailability program aimed to introduce people of all ages and abilities to sailing in a straightforward and fun way and in a supported environment.
“Following an exhibition boat race of Sailability dinghies in December, many people have expressed an interest in either participating in or volunteering with the program,” Ms Bowen said.
“The popularity of this service means we need more volunteers to help ensure we can offer the boating program on an ongoing basis.”
The role of volunteers assisting with the Sailability program could involve safety checks of boats and equipment, rescue boat operations and administration tasks such as rostering and treasury.
Once the program is established, sailing days will be held on weekdays and weekends.
For more information or to register your interest as a volunteer, contact Casey’s disability leisure officer Barbra Sheppard, phone 9705 5200.
