Police called out to bogus siege

CRANBOURNE police went into emergency drive last Thursday after they were called out to a possible siege in Cranbourne South.
Cranbourne South Primary School was put in lockdown at about 2.30pm as armed police were sent to a house near the school and secured the area to keep locals out of danger.
Detective Sergeant Larry Grimshaw from Cranbourne CIU said police received anonymous and conflicting information from three different sources that someone was being held at gunpoint.
“Initially we thought it was going to be a siege situation. But when we searched the house we didn’t find anything,” he said. “The person that was supposed to be held at gunpoint was not there.”
Det Sgt Grimshaw said when the man that was supposed to be the object of the siege was later found he was unaware of the situation.
Children at the school were kept inside until about 4.20pm as a precaution.
Det Sgt Grimshaw said the lockdown and perimeter to stop traffic around the vicinity were all precautions to stop any potential harm to local residents and passers-by.
Assistant principal at Cranbourne South Primary School Nigel Tooth said everything was under control on the day and there was no danger.
