Police plead as road toll mounts

CASEY’s road toll is the highest in the state and police are making fresh calls for local motorists to take more responsibility for their actions.
Fifteen people have died on Casey’s roads this year according to police figures, up from 10 road deaths last year.
Nine of these fatalities have been in the Cranbourne area, three in Endeavour Hills and three in Narre Warren.
Sergeant Pat McGavigan, officer in charge of Casey Traffic Management Unit, said police were extremely disappointed by the figures.
“Casey’s road toll has been exceptionally high this year and we are not satisfied by this at all.
“We are out there doing our best but we need people to take care and obey the road rules, drinking and driving rules and the speed limit.
“If drivers keep risking it by driving irresponsibly it is only a matter of time until they are caught or worse yet until they hurt themselves or someone else,” he said.
Sgt McGavigan also called on the community for support in the lead up to the Christmas period.
“We need the support of the community to try and curb our ever increasing road toll.
“We do not enjoy telling family members that someone has died and we have had to do this too many times this year.
“It has to stop,” he said.
Victoria’s current road toll is 263, up from 261 last year.
