CRANBOURNE Secondary College’s new year seven students were welcomed to the school yesterday with a massive breakfast feast.
The event saw about 400 students, parents and teachers meet and greet each other before the first day of school for the youngsters.
The school has taken in 340 year seven students this year.
Project officer Debbie Nobbs said this was the second year the breakfast had been run after last year’s successful event.
“It’s a chance for the kids to meet their teachers, each other, and for parents to feel much better connected to the school,” she said.
The idea was suggested by a teacher at the school and since its inception, the Cranbourne Secondary College has had its greatest parent involvement.
“We want families to become involved in their children’s education,” Ms Nobbs said.
The local community was also involved in the event with discounts from the Cranbourne Market, South Gippsland Catering Supplies and MacKay’s Butchers, cordial from McDonald’s, food from Heinz, and William Angliss TAFE hospitality students helping out.
Ms Nobbs said there were many opportunities for parents to become involved at the school, including barbecue days, parent groups and support groups.
She said the school was also looking at ways of bringing the community into the school, such as through the Careers Expo.
The breakfast was run in conjunction with the Connected Families – Strong Communities project, aiming to develop stronger connections between parents, students, the college and the community.
