Community steps up support for Koori culture

By Sarah Schwager
CASEY residents have shown their support for reconciliation by celebrating Koori culture during Reconciliation Week last week.
Koori dancing and celebrations at the Australian Garden, Aboriginal information sessions, a flag-raising ceremony and exhibitions provided something for everyone during the week.
City of Casey youth and community development manager Janette Green said celebrations in Casey surrounded the theme ‘take the next step’, promoting a better understanding and greater knowledge of the Aboriginal history of the area.
Aboriginal artefacts and artwork have been on loan from the Koori Heritage Trust and are on display at the Civic Centre Arts Space until 16 June.
Councillors, Aboriginal elders and community members also took part in a flag-raising ceremony, raising the Aboriginal and Australian flags.
