Brakes put on skate park bid

CASEY Council has scrapped its plans to construct a skate park at Kilberry Boulevard in Hampton Park.
Locals had objected to the proposal to build a miniramp, fearing the development would attract “undesirable people” to the area and lead to violence, property damage, graffiti and increased drug and alcohol use in River Gum Reserve.
The skate park was originally planned for the corner of Somerville and Hallam Roads but Melbourne Water rejected the application on safety grounds, claiming Hallam Road was too dangerous to cross.
However, Kilberry Boulevard residents received good news at Tuesday night’s planning committee meeting after councillors voted to withdraw the planning application at Kilberry Valley.
Council officers said they were confident an agreement would be reached with Melbourne Water to revert development of the skate park back to the original site.
“An agreement is yet to be finalised between council officers and Melbourne Water,” the report said.
“However, progress has been made in this matter and it appears that an agreement will be reached.”
River Gum Ward councillor Wayne Smith said the change was a big win for residents, who had been vocal in their objection to the Kilberry Valley site.
“The original site is the better option because it is closer to the shopping centre, in a more highprofile location and away from houses.
“I think everyone will be happy with this decision and I look forward to hearing from Melbourne Water,” he said.
