Cobras in dominant mood

Centuries to both Jordan King and Ryan Hughes was about the only thing rain couldn’t stop on day one of round seven of the Casey Cardinia Cricket Association (CCCA) A Grade competition.

Merinda Park put up yet another massive total with the bat, posting 9/352 against Nar Nar Goon, boosted by King’s 121 off 204 balls.

The knock marked back-to-back tons for King after 113 not out against Cardinia in round six.

By the time he was dismissed, the Cobras were 5/249, with the tail adding another 100 runs through a variety of contributors.

This included Bevin Corneille (34), Tyson Bertrand (15), Daniel Diwell (18 not out) and Brad Hodge (19 not out).

Nipuna Rajapaksha took four poles for the Marygoons in retaliation.

Nar Nar Goon has a heavy task ahead of it on day two, chasing 353 at Lochaven Reserve.

The only other game that had play saw Carlisle Park dominate Clyde on the road.

Disaster struck for the hosts when Ben Knowles (0) was removed in the first over and Marty Gurry (0) was also dismissed in the third over, both by Jaan Balasuriya, to leave the Cougars 2/1.

Sheik Aslam (2) then departed and Clyde was 3/7, staring down the barrel of a tough innings.

Steven Russell (43), Keerat Singh (34) and Ross Elston (22 not out) brought the majority of the resistance, but eventually the Cougars were all out for 128.

Balasuriya grabbed one more wicket to finish with three, while Adam Hollingworth tore through the middle and lower order to record four poles.

Clyde was rolled in just over 35 overs, leaving nearly 40 overs left in the day for the Vikings to bat.

The visitors knocked off 80 runs from their target before skipper Jarrod Armitage (37) was trapped in front by Elston.

Ethan Davies (22) was also caught LBW, this time by Knowles, but Carlisle Park needed just five runs for victory.

Ryan Hughes was the remaining opener and continued to bat wonderfully, helping the Vikings charge past the target and into surplus.

He bashed 13 fours to reach 115 not out from 133 deliveries and Adam Hassan (40 not out) supported him well at the other end.

The visitors got to 3/243 at stumps and will eye an outright result when play resumes on day two.

All other games were effected and abandoned due to the rain, meaning all the matchups will now be played as one-day matches this week.

Those games include Pakenham at home against Cardinia, Kooweerup at Emerald and Pakenham Upper/Toomuc hosting Tooradin.
