Goon…then gap to the rest

B GRADE

Undefeated Nar Nar Goon (5/172) continues to rise to the challenge in CCCA B Grade after overcoming some early hurdles to down Devon Meadows (9/170) on Saturday.

Chasing 171 for victory at Ramlegh Reserve the Goon was in all sorts of trouble at 3/15 with top-order bats Buddhi Heshan (0), Noah Hall (5) and Jed Taylor (0) all unstrapping the pads.

Maninder Singh (12) and Pratap Singh (32) then consolidated the run-chase before Jarratt Eastburn (49 not out) and Tim Miller (47 not out) combined for a match-winning unbeaten 77-run partnership.

Miller was particularly aggressive, facing just 29 balls, with four boundaries and three towering sixes amongst his handy work.

Earlier in the day, Mark Cosgriff (48) and Peter Deighton (34) piloted the Panthers to a competitive one-day score.

Eastburn (2/26) was important before the break; beginning a fine all-round performance.

Emerald (5/169) number-four Ian Crosher (57 not out) was the only B Grade player to score a half-century on the weekend; along with Jacob Carroll (31) and Clinton Marsh (18 not out) setting up a defendable score against Merinda Park (117).

Crosher guided eight balls to the ropes, while Marsh faced just six balls; which included two sixes, as the Bombers finished their innings in style.

Rawley Van Haren (4/28) and Marsh (3/12) then made sure the 12 points remained at Chandler Reserve.

Pakenham Upper/Toomuc (9/130) has shown great character to roll Officer (120) at Pakenham Upper.

The Bullants had the upper hand before tea, with Robert Strang (4/20), Josh Beddows (3/19) and Kevin Baldsing (2/25) keeping the dangerous Yabbies’ batters under wraps.

The Yabbies limped to their 130 score, with Adam Tucker (43 not out), Niran Warnakula (26) and Nick Kyval (23) the main contributors.

The Bullants looked in control after the break with opener Taj Beddows (44) and number-three Baldsing (35) taking the score to a comfortable 1/74.

But the Bullants fell apart at the seams, with a magnificent spell from Warnakula (5/11) leading the Yabbies to a thrilling win.

And Tooradin (4/83) sits in the top four after an easy win over Lang Lang (78).

Tim Huguenin (4/14) and Jack Jenkins (3/14) set up the win for the Gulls, before Ashley Newman (27 not out) and skipper Jono Sherer (24) piloted the run chase.

Brad Savige (3/18) was the number-one performer for Lang Lang.

C GRADE

The magnificent bowling figures of 7/31 would normally ensure victory…but the outstanding seven-wicket haul of Pakenham Upper/Toomuc’s Bailey Smith could not save the Yabbies (84) against Kerala Strikers (9/246) on Saturday.

Smith came up against stiff opposition on the weekend with Arun Kumar (83) making the only half-century in CCCA C Grade, well supported by Sujith Sugathan (38), Jerin Joy (32), Chirayath Raphael (28) and Jonathan George (23).

The Yabbies then folded in reply, with Luke Yeates (24) and Santosh Motwani (20) the only players in the twenties.

Villy Vincent (3/19) did most of the damage for the Strikers.

Melbourne Sixers (89) sit in second place on the ladder after defending a seemingly undefendable score against Upper Beaconsfield (77).

Batting first, the Sixers were rolled in just 26 overs with Ravi Khatri (3/26) bowling the Maroons into a very strong position.

But a great day soon turned sour for the Maroons who were left completely shell-shocked at 6/10 in reply.

Steadying knocks from Jackson Townsend (20), Khatri (21) and Luke Myers (10 not out) help close in on the target, but some terrific bowling from Sanjeewa Senarathna (5/13) and Sampath Dias (4/17) secured the points for the Sixers.

In other games, Rik Gonsalvez (46), Christian Elliott (45), Allash Hassan (3/17) and Rob Fuller (3/19) led undefeated Carlisle Park (8/175) to a comfortable victory over a Gerrad Gilmour (3/26) led Kooweerup (93), while Pakenham (5/96) gained the upper hand over Clyde (94).

Zac Downes, Jarrod Palin and Tristan Sharp took two wickets each for the Lions, before Anthony Ponweera (33) and mighty Mick McLaren (20) guided their team to victory.

D GRADE

Pakenham (9/159) has joined Nar Nar Goon (144) on three wins for the season after the Lions defended brilliantly on the background at the Goon on Saturday.

Lions skipper and Life Member David Searle won the toss and batted; the Lions building a moderate score on the back of fighting knocks from Dene North (60), David Auld (33) and lower-order runs from Nicholas Bowe (16 not out).

Iqbal Singh (3/29) was the pick of the bowlers for the Goon; and would prove a tough nut to crack with the bat.

Singh top scored, making an even 50 batting at nine, rescuing a dire situation with solid support from Luke Merrett (23) and Gagandeep Mangat (20).

The Goon eventually finished 15 runs short of securing points, with Lions’ trio of John Hutchinson (3/27), Auld (3/38) and Kaleb Van Beek (2/11 off 7) doing the bulk of the damage.

Pakenham Upper/Toomuc (2/92) is on the board this season after overcoming Cardinia (9/89) at Lakeside Oval.

Adnan Al Moshi (4/10) made the key breakthrough for the Yabbies, removing Chris Remy (4) early, and played the key hand with the ball.

Gurek Singh (38) top scored for the Bulls; but 89 runs were never going to be enough.

Harpreet Ghandi (58 not out) then ensured the Yabbies cruised to victory, belting 10 fours and one six during his entertaining innings.

Officer (6/169) is still undefeated after an easy win over Devon Meadows (57).

The Bullants were consistent prior to tea with Gary Plunkett (42), Sohaib Khan (31 not out), Caleb Fitzpatrick (30) and Cody Lucas (26) all making stylish contributions.

The Bullants then carved through the Panthers like a hot knife through butter; skipper Plunkett (3/10 off 7) leading the way with a three-wicket haul.

And Merinda Park (4/77) sits in second place after Adrian Slater (3/14) led the Cobras to a six-wicket win over Kerala Strikers (74).

E GRADE WEST

Clyde and Devon Meadows remain undefeated after clinical wins on Saturday.

Batting first, Clyde (7/186) looked in trouble at 6/90 against Carlisle Park (9/127) before Jaxon Zoldak (51) shared a 91-run partnership with his dad Mark (40 not out).

Mark (3/23) then completed a memorable day with a fine spell with the ball.

The top-three of Devon Meadows (4/196) proved too strong for Merinda Park (5/124) with Dave Carson (65), Shane Simpson (50) and Jason Brzezowski (43) setting up a winning score at the Cranbourne West Secondary College.

League-legend Peter Zauner (2/12 off 7) then completed the job with a typically tight performance with the new ball.

And Officer (6/139) has won its first game of the season; rolling Tooradin (114) in an upset at Barton Reserve.

Peter Whebell (48 not out), Harry Austin-Groome (45) and Jatinder Singh (24) laid the foundations for the Bullants before Gurpreet Singh (3/8) and Heath Scott (3/29) kept the Seagulls quiet in reply.

Despite the loss, Damian (46) and Axel Whitnell (20) shared some quality time in the middle for the red, white and green.

E GRADE EAST

The winning streak of Emerald (2/80) is still unblemished after a dominant display against Pakenham (78) at Toomuc Reserve.

Fine bowling from Ollie Jessop (3/14), Andrew Ferrier (2/5 off 7) and Bailin Jessop (2/23) gave the Bombers the upper hand before James Campbell (30), Nicholas Pascoe (19 not out) and Thomas Hill (18 not out) piloted their team to victory.

Jonty Savage (27) played a lone hand for the Lions.

Kerala Strikers (209) have claimed a first win after a high-scoring contest against Clyde (171).

Anirudh Menon (48), Jaise Abraham (42), Aayush Parikh (33) and Danial Tahir (30) were all in form for the Strikers, who repelled the very best that Arya Patel (5/29) had to offer.

Shahzaib Umair (60), Savan Patel (30) and Shane Jack (26) then returned fire for the Cougars, but three wickets to Anil George (3/22) got the Strikers home by 38 runs.

And Avengers (7/145) have kicked two games clear in second place after a hard-fought win over Officer (6/144).

A fine knock from Oseem Dhawan (44) gave the Bullants a fighting chance, but Ranjith Vadakkumthanni (37), Kumar Nandakumar (28) and Vikas Choudhary (26) got the Avengers home with three wickets in hand and two overs to spare.
