TWO Cranbourne girls are making waves in the hairdressing industry literally.
Apprentice hairdressers Haley Daffen, 20, and Amie Cohen, 17, of The Stag Hair Salon in High Street, can now add award winning hair stylists to their resumes after their efforts in a Chisholm Institute of TAFE hairdressing competition on Sunday.
Firstyear apprentice Amie took just 45 minutes to beat three other hairdressers to finish first in the ‘style only’ section.
Her braid and curl creation wowed the judges and dually impressed her hairdresser mother and grandfather.
“It was pretty easy actually. I thought it would be much harder,” Amie said.
“I had been practising a lot in the lead up to the competition so I wasn’t nervous.
“I was really happy to win and my mum was really pleased, too.”
Amie said the competition was her first and after her performance on the weekend hoped to showcase her talent in many more.
“I love to be creative and this competition was a good experience and helped me to learn a bit more,” she said.
“I’m definitely going to enter more competitions so I can get more experience.
“Then one day I want to own my own hair and beauty salon.”
Thirdyear apprentice Haley was also proud to finish third out of 17 other strong competitors in the ‘creative colour and style’ division.
“I had two and a half hours to colour and style my model’s hair,” she said.
“I dyed her hair blonde with splashes of chocolate and styled a messy, wavy look.
“I cut her hair beforehand so I could do a colour to match the cut.”
The 2005 Apprentice of the Year nominee said that although she found the competition “nerveracking with the judges walking around”, she thoroughly enjoyed the day and was delighted with her result.
“I like doing creative colours and styling funky cuts,” Haley said.
“I thought a lot about it before so I knew exactly what I was going to do.”
