Grand final defeat can’t remove gloss from Kooweerup season

KOOWEERUP BOWLS

The season ended disappointingly in the ‘big one’ with Kooweerup beaten in the grand final by Mornington Civic on a tricky-green at Belvedere losing 50-63.

The rink of Wayne Stevens, Rob Matthews, Rex Alexander and Cam Davey could not bridge the early gap set up by their opposition and lost 11-20.

Losing four shots on a couple of ends did not help the cause for Brett Condron, Peter Butera, Bec Watts and Daniel Price defeated 20-25.

The bright spot for the day was the winning rink of Steven Jenkins, Ian Richardson, Jimi Watts and Jim Jenkins with a narrow 19-18 win.

It was great to see many members/supporters in attendance trying to get our team across the line.

Although missing out, the season should be considered successful with Div. 8 making the grand final, Div. 9 with a number of inexperienced players and Tuesday Div. 4 missing the finals by seven points.

The club managed to introduce five players to Pennant competition, none of which had played the game previously, with three playing in the grand final.

Hopefully we will be able to attract some more recruits next season and be in a position to field two Tuesday teams.

The final day of Friday Triples competition was held before the old clubhouse was demolished.

The final days of this competition will be held at Lang Lang Bowls Club and we thank them for their assistance.

The results for the day saw the team of Trevor Kitchin, Ken White (Longwarry) and Noel Speight (Kooweerup) winning with 37 points.

Runner-up rink, with 33 points and 20 shots up, was Peter Bott (Pakenham), Dennis Throup and Michael Hahn (Phillip Island).

Best one-game winners were; 1st game: Neville Kitchin, Kevin Kitchin and John Williams (Lang Lang) with 18 points and 2nd game: Roger Woollard (Loch Dist), Jim Jenkins and Pauline Gray (Kooweerup) on 18 points and 12 shots up.

The coveted ‘chocolate award’ went to Michael Hahn (Phillip Island) with eight touches.
