Day of chaos as roads turn wet

AUSTRALIA Day ended in chaos for emergency crews who were called to two collisions in an hour on Cranbourne’s notorious Thompsons Road.
Two people were airlifted to hospital after a head on collision at the corner of Thompsons Road and Narre WarrenCranbourne Road at about 7.30pm on Thursday.
An 18yearold Berwick girl and a threeyearold Cranbourne boy were taken to the Alfred Hospital with serious injuries.
They are in a serious but stable condition. Three other occupants suffered minor injuries. The road was closed for a few hours as police and CFA crews cleared the scene.
Acting Sergeant Casey TMU Mal Marsden said the collision was believed to have been caused by wet roads following the Australia Day storms. He said no charges were expected to be laid.
Less than an hour earlier police and CFA crews were called to a collision at the intersection of Thompsons Road and DandenongHastings Road.
Four people were taken to hospital after three cars collided about 6.40pm. A 31yearold Cranbourne man, 22yearold Wantirna girl and two 16 yearoldboys from Pakenham and Officer received minor injuries. Police are still investigating the cause of the incident.
The collisions have prompted a CFA warning for motorists to take extra care on wet roads.
“With the long dry spell the state is currently experiencing, motorists should be aware that the roads can become very slippery after summer storms,” Cranbourne CFA fire officer David Renkin said.
“There is a need for drivers to be extra careful on our roads when confronted with sudden changes in road conditions.”
