The Lost Dogs’ Home is urging calm after receiving numerous and distressed calls from pet owners worried about their dogs and cats contracting Foot and Mouth Disease.
Head of Veterinary Services at The Lost Dogs’ Home, Dr Jess Wilde, said there were no reports of the disease affecting pets such as dogs and cats.
“From what we have seen so far, Foot and Mouth Disease does not affect humans, horses, or companion animals such as dogs and cats,” Dr Wilde said.
“Like all animal welfare organisations, we are monitoring the situation closely but there is certainly no cause for alarm if you have a dog or a cat.
“Our Cranbourne shelter regularly takes in stray farm animals so to the effect we remain vigilant and continue to monitor advice from the government.
“If anyone has any concerns about your pets we encourage you to speak to your local vet.”
