The three: Reducing waste

The three – Ways to reduce waste

Sunday 6 March is Clean up Australia Day. Here’s three easy ways you can reduce waste.

Recycle soft plastics.

Coles and Woolworths supermarkets allow for recycling of soft plastic bags like bread bags, zip lock bags, chocolate and snack bar wrappers and cereal box liners.

These stores have special recycling bins where you can drop the soft plastics off.

To check if your packaging is eligible to be recycled, look for an Australian Recycling Label symbol or the REDcycle logo.

Buy second-hand

Before buying something brand new, check your local op shop, second-hand store or online forum like Gumtree or Facebook marketplace to see if they stock what you’re looking for.

The quality may not be as good as a new product but you’ll be reducing the number of products in circulation which ultimately means one less thing to go to landfill at the end of its life-cycle.

Don’t forget to donate your old clothes too!

Plan your meals

Before you head to the supermarket, make a meal plan of what you plan to eat in the coming few days.

This will make for pointed shopping trip and reduce food wastage on the other end.

Furthermore, be across what’s already in your fridge to avoid buying double-ups.
