Casey-based Melbourne City travelled to face the lowly ranked Western Sydney Wanderers with City coming off a strong win against Newcastle and looking to leap to the top of the table.
City started strongly but failed to capitalise until the 36th minute when Mathew Leckie found himself in a world of space guiding a strong header past the keeper.
Leckie found himself using his head again as he got on the end of a well-placed corner kick to continue to drive home City’s advantage just before half time.
Melbourne had the opportunity to go 3-0 up in the 60th minute but failed to capitalise on a penalty opportunity. Star Striker Jamie Maclaren failed to convert, missing to the left on what should have been his eighth goal for the season.
City quickly went up 3-0 through a Florin Berenguer wonder-strike that clattered the back of the net. The Frenchman continues his run of form and continues to hit the scoreboard.
Melbourne City conceded a late penalty after an errant handball by Curtis Good…Wanderers star Dimi Petrakos converted the penalty in the 80th minute.
City coming out 3-1 winners and now finds itself only one point behind ladder leaders and cross-town rivals Western United.
The win marks the third straight interstate win for the boys in blue – the first time in the clubs history.
City now come home and face Adelaide , Newcastle and Central Coast in a bumper 10-day fixture as they look to consolidate a finals spot.
