City prove too strong

Casey’s very own Melbourne City have held off a fast-finishing Newcastle Jets outfit to win 4-2 away from home on Tuesday night.

City were bolstered by the return of Mathew Leckie and Jamie Maclaren, who returned after a two-match stint in green and gold in an attempt to help Australia progress to the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

After a steady and defensive start from both teams it was French international Florin Berenguer who was first to open the scoring for City just before half-time.

Taking a 1-0 lead to the break, the boys in blue continued their form in the second half with a well-guided ball past the keeper to help Melbourne to a 2-0 lead.

Maclaren was once again in the action setting up Mathew Leckie for an easy strike, making it 3-0 in a hurry.

Newcastle struck back with a penalty after a Scott Galloway foul making the scoreline 3-1. Maclaren was in the thick of the action again with his second goal, a shot from outside the box taking a deflection and sailing past the keeper for his second.

City defenders were caught off guard by a late Jets goal the game finishing in a 4-2 win for the Casey boys.

Melbourne should be glad with the win in there first match in 10 days after a Covid outbreak caused their previously fixture to be postponed.
