THE Cavaliers men clean swept their weekend double-header, knocking off Melton 83-62 at home before travelling up the highway to just edge past Pakenham 80-76 while the women returned to the winner’s list with a 25-point thumping of Blackburn.
Trailing at the half 35-37, the Cavaliers exploded from that point on – smashing 29-9 in the third term to put Melton out of contention.
Monster matches from Dylan Wayman (24 points, 10 rebounds), Michael Troyahn (15 points) and Ash Szalek (12 points, 12 rebounds) led the Cavaliers to their 21-point victory.
“Saturday night was one of the best games that the Cavs have ever played over the last three years,” coach Cory Smith said.
“The way they played together and played as a team – it’s very easy to coach when they want to play like that.
“Couldn’t really pick any from my whole group of nine that didn’t do what I wanted them to do – it was very pleasing.”
In Sunday’s match against Pakenham, the Cavaliers had to work for the points, pushing past an eager, young Warriors line-up to score the four-point win.
Wayman made it two double-doubles for the weekend with 20 points and 11 rebounds, with good assistance from Jordan Jacotine (18 points, five rebounds), Bevan Camilleri (13 points) and Szalek (10 points, eight rebounds)
“Always a tough match between our clubs, especially at their home court – we got a pretty good start and they nearly pegged us back with a couple of silly decisions from our guys.
“Tied up with about half a minute to go so it was good to get the win eventually.”
The Cavaliers women smashed Blackburn, with Cranbourne blitzing on their away trip in all facets to turn around a middling month of average form. Renae Mokrzycki ran riot over the Vikings – 19 points and 22 rebounds capped off an impressive spell of form where she was named Big V Division 2 player of the month. Alex Keates (10 points, eight rebounds), Jade Foot (11 points, three three-pointers) and Amy McFarlane (11 points) were also impressive for the Cavaliers.
In the Youth Championship Mens, the Cavaliers destroyed Southern Peninsula 93-47. From limited minutes Bosko Kostur (16 points, eight rebounds) and Josh Lemi (14 points, five rebounds) were the standouts.
