Demand for dogs and puppies at The Lost Dogs’ Home is close to exceeding supply with Victorians stuck in lockdown limbo and increasingly looking for companionship.

Data released from The Lost Dogs’ Home has revealed:

– 416 adoptions took place in August, another month where the Home recorded its highest number in over a decade

– 92 dogs adopted is the most dogs adopted in a month since January 2020, and the Home’s equal fifth most since January 2019

– Of those 92, 25 dogs were adopted from the Cranbourne shelter along with four puppies.

The Home’s spokesperson Suzana Talevski said with more people at home, the number of dogs coming into the Cranbourne and North Melbourne shelters has fallen by around 12 per cent in the last month which meant there were less dogs to rehome.

Cats and kittens were still proving popular for Melbournians with 222 felines adopted in August.

Of those, 69 cats were adopted from Cranbourne, along with eight kittens.

The current waiting time to adopt a cat or kitten is around 10 days.

Ms Talevski said while it was understandable some members in the community felt frustrated at having to wait longer than desired to adopt, the Home was committed to ensuring all boxes were ticked to minimise returns post lock-down period and beyond.

“We implore people to think carefully when considering adopting a pet and urge those contacting the Home to have patience and courtesy when dealing with our staff.

“Verbal abuse or violence against our staff will not be tolerated in any circumstance,’’ she said.
