Friendly faces ready to vax

Tooradin Pharmacy has leapt into action as part of the Covid-19 vaccine rollout.

Pharmacist Brendan Green said since starting the Covid vaccination clinic in mid-August, patient levels had picked up well with many days booked out.

The pharmacy is currently vaccinating around 10 to 15 people a day.

“We’ve been able to double the vaccination capacity in the town,” Mr Green said.

He explained that pharmacies are ideally placed to provide the Covid-19 vaccine because pharmacists are often one of a person’s primary and regular care providers, and are therefore a welcoming and familiar face.

Pharmacists also understand their patients’ medical history and are qualified to provide expert advice on the vaccine.

“The community trusts us; we can answer their questions in a safe and private environment.”

He said while there had been some vaccine hesitancy – which he said was different to being anti-vaccination – patient numbers were definitely on the increase.

“I think there’s been a bit of vaccine hesitancy due to the mixed messaging that’s been around, but I think the messaging has streamlined in the last couple of weeks to say the most important thing we can do is get a vaccine, in a timely manner.

“If people are concerned about getting the vaccine, we’re happy to talk to them. We know their health history, can talk through the pros and cons and what the benefits are and help them make an informed decision for their health and the community’s health.

“The sooner we get enough people vaccinated the better as far as our chances of returning to normal.”

Tooradin Pharmacy is currently taking bookings via the website and phone.

Patients can book their vaccine at www.tooradinpharmacy.com.au, or www.findapharmacy.com.au, or can call 5998 3771.

Tooradin Pharmacy currently offers AstraZeneca vaccines only, with the Moderna vaccine expected later in September or in early October.
