The Australian community have opened their hearts to the beloved Sikh Volunteers Australia, donating funds in record time to help the organisation build its new facility.

Money poured in from across the country – $628,000 in fact, in just five days.

Jaswinder Singh, secretary of Sikh Volunteers Australia, said “each and every single penny” will go towards fulfilling the organisation’s dream of a new, purpose-built site in Cranbourne West.

Construction is expected to start later this year or early next year.

The facility will allow the volunteers to increase their food production approximately nine-fold – from around 1500 meals a day to 10,000.

Mr Singh said all 300 of the organisation’s volunteers – who currently work out of a location in Devon Meadows – are looking forward to it.

“With this new facility in place, we can have more hands on deck and everyone can contribute,” he said.

He thanked the community for donating to the cause and said it proved that Australians were willing to extend a helping hand to those in need.

“It’s really heart-warming and touching that the whole multicultural society is coming together and trying to help people in need,” he said.

“This is the spirit Australia needs and the way we can go forward.”

Sikh Volunteers Australia is currently running home deliveries of freshly cooked vegetarian meals to those in need in the south east of Melbourne.
