LANGWARRIN South writer Sally Bird has learnt not to sit around waiting for something to happen.
That is why her scripts have been read by Hollywood producers and even Al Pacino, who considered taking a role in one of her films.
Now her farcical, romantic comedy Powerball is set to be read by professional actors including Tim Robertson, who has had supporting roles in many Australian films and televsion, Barry Dickins and a team of great theatre actors at the Frankston Art Centre’s Cube 37 on 19 November.
The public is invited along to the reading, which will start at 2pm.
The script is centered on a struggling country football team and the ridiculous lengths its people go to in order to save the club from financial ruin.
Meet club president Richard Fraser, whose extraordinary drive is second to none and mobile phone company sales executive Travis Cutler, who may hold the key to the club’s success. Only one person seems opposed to the wave of support. Or are there more? Will love conquer all, or will the tradition of the game win out, or will they both lose?
Ms Bird has more than 20 years’ script writing experience.
She studied screenwriting at RMIT and has since written five feature films, three of which have received development funding from Film Victoria – Be Near Me, Betsy and the Emperor, and Rat Trap.
She has developed a television series and made a number of short films.
While her feature film scripts have been to Hollywood they are yet to be made.
She has decided to take matters into her own hands and has organised the reading of Powerball with the view to making the film in the next two years.
Since this announcement, she teamed up with a local producer and gathered a cast including Barry Dickins, Charmayne Lane , Katharine Innes and Rain Fuller.
Ms Bird’s sister, song writer Joey Mac, will perform one of her latest songs during the reading.
“It should be a fantastic afternoon’s entertainment for $9,” Ms Bird said.
“It is also an opportunity for the audience to take part in the development of an Australian film as they get to comment on it, which, of course, we will take on board.
“But for me, it is just fantastic to get to see my material finally being performed .”
It is not the first time Ms Bird’s work has been professionally read. Her feature film script Be Near Me was read at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image by Screenplay in 2004.
Cost is $9 per ticket, for bookings call 9784 1060.
