SANDHURST’S Lauren Ellery proved to be the most fashion-forward filly at the Pakenham Gazette Oaks Day, taking out the most coveted category in the Fashions on the Field.
The 23-year-old impressed the judges Andrew Tolley of Strickland and Sons, Melissa Balsom of Melbourne Styling Concepts and Country Racing Victoria’s Fashion Blogger, Olivia Porter to win the Most Elegant Lady category.
Ms Ellery wore a structured navy dress from online store Asos and a custom-designed-and-created navy and orange hat by Tyabb milliner Annette Sanfillippo.
Ms Ellery said it was the first time she had won a Fashions on the Field title, after placing second at Pakenham Oaks Day in 2007.
“I was very, very surprised because I have never won before,” Ms Ellery said.
“All I wanted was the sash!”
Ms Ellery proved that you don’t have to spend big to make a big impression.
“My dress was really cheap, it only cost $40, and I wanted to do something different than black, which was alternative but still on trend,” Ms Ellery said.
“I actually went quite far out of my comfort zone, I normally do flowy, feminine outfits, but decided to do something structured, and not girly this year. It seemed to work though.”
For those looking to compete next year, Ms Ellery suggested staying true to your individual style and what you felt comfortable in.
“Stick to what you feel good in, and it’s definitely going to look great.”
