A CHANCE to get fit and save money at the same time may seem too good to be true, but Erik Muir does it every day.
Mr Muir rides his bike part of the way from his house in Hampton Park to work at Monash University Clayton and back every day, and will be participating in the annual Ride to Work Day to promote healthy living.
“My normal ride everyday is from home to Hallam station, and then ride from Clayton station to Monash University,” Mr Muir said.
“I’ve always enjoyed riding bikes; it cuts costs, it’s a more economical means of transport and I get exercise at the same time.
On the days he takes his bike, a typical round trip could mean Mr Muir rides for about 20km, but distance doesn’t stop him and he rarely misses an opportunity to ride to work.
“I mostly aim to ride in, but occasionally, if I have to bring something in, I’ll drive to work,” he said.
“The main reason I ride is economics, because it saves me so much money. I used to live in Caulfield and riding part of the way to work meant I travelled in one zone rather than two zones, which cuts down the cost of travel.
“I used to spend about $50 a week travelling and I pretty much got that down to roughly $10 a week.”
Ride to Work Day is on Wednesday 12 October.
