On feet to beat cancer

By Emma Sun
CANDICE VAZ will be walking for cancer this Friday when she participates in the Cancer Council’s Walk to Work Day.
The Lynbrook resident will walk from her house to Hallam Station before taking the train to work.
Two of Ms Vaz’s sisters-in-law have had cancer, as well as a few of her friends, which is what first prompted her to do the walk.
Ms Vaz encourages everyone to take part and contribute to a great cause.
“We need to be able to finance more research as there are still so many answers to find in terms of prevention rather than just a cure,” she said.
“Besides, I am using the walk to remind people that staying healthy is important and walking is one of the simplest, basic and easiest ways to do it.”
Cancer is one of the biggest health problems in Australia, with about 114,000 cases diagnosed last year.
It is expected to claim the lives of more than 40,000 Australians this year.
While one in every two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85, about 30 per cent of cancers can be prevented through a healthy lifestyle of good nutrition and regular exercise, such as walking.
Anyone interested in participating can visit www.walk.com.au to register for Cancer Council Walk to Work Day.
