AN open day for the Hampton Park Community Garden will be held this weekend to mark its completion.
The community garden, at Uniting Place in Hampton Park, will be officially opened by City of Casey Mayor Shar Balmes on Saturday with a range of workshops and a free barbecue lunch.
The community garden is a partnership between Casey Community Care, Wallara Disability Support, Hampton Park Community Renewal and the Uniting Church.
Uniting Church minister Mat Harry said the garden would be a great benefit to the community.
“It has been designed specifically to allow access for people of all abilities to come together to grow food and to get to know each other,” he said.
“To be a gathering place and point of community connection, thereby seeking to reduce social isolation.
“The garden is a wonderful way in which we seek to promote healthy physical outdoor activity and good nutrition within the community.
“By providing a place to grow fresh vegetables and herbs we hope to assist local food security issues as families supplement their food supply.”
The garden will open at 9.30am, with a free workshop on ‘how to build a raised garden bed’ kicking off at 11am.
A free barbecue lunch will be held at 12.30pm, with Cr Balmes to officially launch the garden at 1pm. Another workshop on the same topic will run again at 1.30pm.
The garden is located at Uniting Place, Corner Hallam Road and Coral Drive, Hampton Park.
