WALK Safely To School Day saw many Cranbourne Primary students strolling to school last Friday morning.
Principal Cheryl Van Deursen told the Cranbourne News about the fund-raising walkathon that also happened at the school in the day.
“Children actually brought things to push and pull,” she said. “They were pushing bikes and gold buggies and prams and suitcases.”
And they were doing it to raise funds to spruce up their playground.
Then they finished off with a sausage sizzle.
Ms Van Deursen said most of the 310 school students walked around the school circuit, with the combined total of their laps adding up to 1318 kilometres.
“It takes you to Queensland,” Ms Van Deursen said, “as the bird flies.”
The National Walk Safely to School Day has been encouraging kids to walk to school as often as possible for 12 years. The event also aims to help students develop the vital road and traffic safety skills they need as pedestrians.
Federal MP for Holt, Anthony Byrne, joined the walk and said the day was a great opportunity to “promote the benefits of walking for health and encourage all of us to find ways to make walking an activity that is safe, easy and fun.”
