Kids gear up for work

By Bridget Cook
The year 10 students took part in the school’s Smart Futures Best Practice Interview Program.
The aim of the program is to give students the chance to hone their employment application skills including letter writing, resume writing and how to take part in an interview.
Each student had to apply for a fictitious position and were then given an job interview time to attend, in appropriate attire.
Part of the application process was to also submit a letter of application and resume.
The students were then interviewed for the position by panel members, representatives from local businesses, community groups and staff, and then given feedback.
Student Pathways coordinator Frances Fenech said the program had proved successful.
“Most of our year 10 students at this stage of the year have had minimal if any experience in these skills,” she said.
“They are scheduled to complete work experience at the end of term two in June. Many have not had any previous work history.
“For the students, this process is something that really challenges them and takes them out of their comfort zone.
“From our experience of running the program, we know that the students truly value the feedback given by their panel members about their application and interview skills.”
Ms Fenech said she would like to thank all the local community members and representatives from local businesses who made the program possible.
