I may be small but I’m a champion digger!

They may have short legs and appear stocky– but don’t let that fool you as the furry marsupial can run speeds of up to 40 kilometres per hour.

In appreciation of the much-loved animal, Pearcedale’s Moonlit Sanctuary celebrated World Wombat Day on Tuesday 22 October.

The Tyabb-Tooradin Road sanctuary showcased their resident wombats to the public with a range of activities.

Pictured, is wildlife keeper Brodie Zealand with 13-year-old Mary, a common breed wombat, who enjoyed an afternoon of displaying her training skills.

The sanctuary also has a second type of species; a southern hairy-nosed wombat named Birri.

World Wombat Day has been celebrated since October 2005, and is a light-hearted day for Australians to celebrate one of our most iconic animals.
