CASEY Council has bought a methane hot spot property in the Brookland Greens estate.
The council said the house had triggered the majority of the methane alerts in the Cranbourne housing estate, and was the catalyst for the emergency being called in 2008 when methane gas was found in a wall cavity.
The property is 14 Powerscout Retreat.
Mitigation works have been carried out on the property, and the owners of the property took up the council’s offer for alternate accommodation.
The council’s waste manager Michael Jansen said the unique circumstances of the property were the reason the council bought it.
“As the monitor had triggered on a number of occasions at this particular property due to the presence of remnant methane trapped under the ground, the EPA issued a clean-up notice that required council to undertake additional mitigation works to extract methane from the ground and ensure that all possible methane pathways are secured,” Mr Jansen said.
The property will be leased once works have been completed, the council said.
Casey chief executive Mike Tyler said the council did not plan on buying any more properties in Brookland Greens.
