A crafty market move

By Bridget Cook
CRANBOURNE could host a monthly Moomba-style market attracting up to 10,000 people if resident Steve Beardon has his way.
The Cranbourne resident and former councillor has renewed calls to Casey Council for such a market he initiated while on council.
“My vision was for a Moomba type festival and market every month, including a market complete with activities, rides and all the fun that families and kids crave,” he said.
“Some of the benefits would be massive fundraising opportunities for local clubs, preschools, potential crowds of up to 10,000 a month visiting the market and spending dollars in Cranbourne,” he said.
Mr Beardon said there were a number of market operators and venues that would suit a large-scale market and festival on a monthly basis.
Mr Beardon has called on the council to get the ball rolling again on the possibility of bring a market to Cranbourne.
“Craft Markets Australia was keen to bring their successful event to Cranbourne a couple of years back,” he said.
“It is vitally important that council re-instate these negotiations and commit to helping promote their market through advertising.
“Berwick has Akoonah Park market, Frankston and Dandenong have large successful markets, Tooradin has a smaller market – we need one.”
The City of Casey has supported the call.
City of Casey manager economic development David Wilkinson said council was continuing its discussions with CMA and the Cranbourne Turf Club about the possibility of a market operating at Cranbourne Racecourse.
“Discussions have been taking place over the past 12 months and the council is hopeful of an agreement whilst considering a number of options,” Mr Wilkinson said.
CMA did not reply to News inquires before going to print.
