IT WON’T bring back five young lives, but a safer Hallam Road is in the making.
Since the two collisions that killed five people on the corner of Ormond and Hallam Roads last year, community cries grew louder for the long-awaited duplication of Hallam Road.
And in May the State Government announced what some Hampton Park residents thought they would never hear- a $35 million commitment to duplicate the busy thoroughfare.
Resident Erica Maliki said the victory with Hallam Road meant the people had not died in vain.
“The Hallam Road duplication is a really big win. It’s a shame that it took five people to die at that intersection for something to be done with the road,” Ms Maliki said.
Hallam Road will be duplicated between Pound and Ormond roads, and new traffic signals will be installed at three sites along the road, including upgrading the temporary signals to permanent ones at the Ormond Road intersection and pedestrian lights at the St Kevin’s Primary School crossing.
At the time of the announcement, Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley said it was a great win for a community that campaigned tirelessly.
“The project will make Hampton Park and Narre Warren South a better and safer place for motorists and pedestrians,” Ms Graley said.
