Alkira Secondary College held a Holocaust Remembrance Day Thursday, 30 August.
In attendance were Gia Lipshut who told her story of survival during the Holocaust, Les Kausman from Courage to Care, City of Casey Cr Rosalie Crestani, students and teachers from Mount Scopus Memorial College, other special guests from the Jewish Community and Year 9 and 10 students from Alkira Secondary College.
The Year 9 students were the audience and the Year 10 students ran the ceremony.
“Discovering parts of my history that I’d never delved into enlightened me to the atrocities my ancestors had to live through. It made me grateful and aware to stop anything like it from occurring again,” Year 12 student Dylan Winestone said.
Year 10 student Jessie Little said, “The Commemoration Ceremony taught me that no matter what I am facing and finding hard right now, there is always someone out there doing it harder or struggling more, so don’t stress the small things and take every opportunity possible to live every day as the last.”
Chairman of Courage to Care Tony Weldon said, “A thousand thanks to all of you for the magnificent way in which you are teaching about and learning from the past.
“It is in this way that all involved will go into the wide world and contribute to it becoming the place we all want it to be.”
