Cheerful check-up

By Bridget Brady
THE Creaky Ladies have been chewing the fat for more than 30 years.
The group of ladies, from around the Cannons Creek area, get together on the first Wednesday of each month and have a general gossip and chat about what’s news around town and with each other.
Joyce Brown, 91, from Cannons Creek has been part of Creaky Ladies for about 13 years and said it was a nice, social outlet.
The numbers differ from about eight to 14 ladies and Mrs Brown said she had made good friends through the group.
“But I forbid any talk on politics or religion,” she said.
The ladies have the community’s interest at heart, as they use the small fee of $2 per person, per monthly visit to go towards a local group or individual in need of support.
“If we see in the local paper that someone needs money or needs help we try to help if we can.”
The Creaky Ladies meet at different spots around town and had their latest get-together at a Castello’s Hotel in Berwick.
“I think that as some people get older they don’t go out as much so it’s really just a social group and if you want to come, you come.
“It’s more or less keeping up to date with what’s happening around here. We all get along well, nobody argues because I don’t allow any bun fights.”
