Our men behind Akon

By Bridget Brady
A LYNBROOK resident this week warmed up the crowds before R’n’B star Akon took to the stage at Hisense Arena.
Giovanni Ruapene, 27, and his cousin Dave, 26, formed Phinesse about four years ago and were geared to support Akon during his Australian tour.
It marks the second big name the duo has supported, after performing as the warm-up act for rapper 50 Cent last year.
Mr Ruapene said he and his cousin attended the same high school and used to sing together at church.
Born in New Zealand, Mr Ruapene said music was a part of their lives from a young age.
He described their music as urban pop that was “feelgood”.
They are promoting their new single, Flaunt It, and will have their album out next year.
“Of course it’ a big opportunity for us to really get out there,” he said.
“Performing is a really good buzz.”
Mr Ruapene said Phinesse would be happy to enjoy half the success Akon had.
“We both bring something different and we complement each other.”
Mr Ruapene said Phinesse’s urban R’n’B style was different to other styles out at the moment.
“It’s not like anything that’s out there. We’re not trying to mimic anyone. We take inspiration from them but then you’ve got to bring your own flavour.”
