Hampers donated by generous students

By Jenna-Hutton Murdoch

TIS the season to be jolly and Alkira Secondary College is spreading Christmas joy with the creation of hampers to be distributed through the Salvation Army to less fortunate families.
Organised by the school’s Student Representative Council (SRC), the hampers consist of generous pupil and teacher donations including an array of food and gifts.
Held annually in December, the Alkira Secondary College community has always been beneficent with hampers often overflowing.
However, this year SRC member Cael proposed a festive clothes day where students were encouraged to dress festively on the proviso that they donated to the hampers.
This initiative significantly increased donations with hampers so abundantly full that in addition to the wrapped and prepared gift baskets, the school will donate supplementary items separately.
“These hampers are a fantastic way for students to get involved in community service,” said teacher Nicole Bruerton.
Students are actively involved in making these hampers and soliciting donations.
SRC member Bailey, who has been involved with creating the hampers for the last two years, said he looked forward to wrapping the hampers and described it as a highlight of his year.
