Golden girl

By Bridget Brady
Not only did the police officer from Devon Meadows meet an abundance of other police and fire members from around the world, but she also took out one gold and three silver medals.
Constable Carvill, 38, who works at the Dandenong Police Station, won her gold medal for the discuss event and the silver medals in the 3000m steeple, shot put and javelin.
“I was pretty rapt. And the gold medal was for my last event so it was a nice way to finish,” she said.
The games are held every two years for police and fire members and this year more than 10,000 competitors took part in more than 60 events from 31 July to 9 August.
Const Carvill, who arrived home last week, said she had an amazing time and was a big fan of the event.
“I think it’s a great concept,” she said. “It’s a networking thing and great for fitness.”
Const Carvill trained about five days a week in the lead-up to the friendly event.
“It can be competitive, depending on the athlete. But it’s a friendly thing so if you want to succeed it’s about how much training you put into it.”
This was the second time Const Carvill participated in the games, after she travelled to Adelaide for the event in 2007.
Const Carvill said she wanted to recruit officers from her station to take part in the next World Police and Fire Games, which will be held in New York in 2011 and will coincide with the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. “I recommend it and I’ve been trying to get a huge congregation of the girls here to go. I’ve got two years,” she said.
