Helpers in the driver’s seat

By Bridget Brady
A CASEY health service is urgently looking for drivers with heavy vehicle licences to volunteer to get behind the wheel and transport clients.
The Cardinia Casey Community Health Service runs activity groups and organises outings for the frail, aged and disabled and is keen to hear from motorists who are happy to volunteer their time to drive the Toyota Hi-Ace vans to pick- up and drop-off clients.
The health service, based at the Cranbourne Integrated Care Centre, offers the programs as social outlets for clients and the activities include games, craft, music and outings.
Volunteer co-ordinator Michele Foley said days were negotiable for drivers, but pick up and drop off times were in the morning from about 9am to 9.30am then in the afternoon from 3pm to 4pm.
She said volunteers were an integral part of the program.
“If we don’t have drivers it upsets the whole program and really limits what we can do,” Ms Foley said.
“A lot of people who need transport can’t get into a car easily.
“We have six groups running and there are a lot of clients who are picked up and taken home.”
Ms Foley said it was important these clients engaged in social activities and the program also offered relief for carers.
If anyone with a heavy vehicle licence is interested in volunteering their time call Michele Foley on 5990 6290.
