Hoons under the hammer

By Bridget Brady
POLICE will step up patrols in a Cranbourne North street to deter hoons who are infuriating residents.
Rosebank Drive residents are fed up with excessive speed and noise, burn-outs, bouts of crime including stolen property, vandalism and bottles thrown from cars.
The residents have called for speed humps to be installed to prevent the high speeds, which sometimes reached more than 80km/h.
Resident Glen Arnott said the traffic islands in place did little to stop the hoons, who were at their worst from 4pm to 6pm and on weekends.
One resident, who did not want to be named, said the hoons often woke him in the middle of the night.
“If these hoons miss a turn they will end up in someone’s bedroom. We want something to happen before somebody gets killed,” he said.
Mayfield Ward councillor Amanda Stapledon presented a petition with 47 signatures at the last council meeting. It was an appeal for help to curb the dangerous and destructive behaviour, Cr Stapledon said.
“These reports are very concerning. No resident should have to live like this. It’s totally unacceptable. The council is investigating this issue and will engage with police to work toward addressing this problem.”
Mr Arnott said the council opened the street about a year ago when the Camden Green estate was being built.
Cr Stapledon said she encouraged residents to continue calling the hoon hotline or police when the behaviour occurred.
