Driver in tree smash

A MAN is nursing injuries in The Alfred hospital after his car hit a fallen tree at Somerville on Wednesday morning.
Advanced life support paramedics from Langwarrin and Cranbourne and intensive care paramedics from Frankston were called to the intersection of Dandenong-Hastings Road and Eramosa Road East just before 7am to treat the injured Bittern driver.
Intensive care paramedic Matt Smith said crews arrived to find a tree had fallen across the intersection.
“The tree fell across the road in front of a car,” he said.
“A 60-year-old man was unable to stop in time and his car hit the tree.”
Mr Smith said the man could not get out of his extensively damaged car.
“He told us he felt a crack in his neck. Given the potential for spinal injuries we fitted a neck brace to the man,” he said.
“He was removed from the car on a spine board and his head strapped to the board to prevent further movement.”
