Boost to skills

A TRADE training centre for local schools will be built to provide students with the opportunity to learn new trades.
This week, Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne announced that the centre would receive up to $10.4 million in funding from the Rudd Government.
“The investment will allow new or upgraded trade training facilities to be built at local schools, with a key focus on skills in emerging industries and technologies,” he said.
“This funding will provide the opportunity for young people in our area to obtain skills using quality trade training facilities.”
The Hallam Valley Trade Training and Skills Hub was approved funding of between $500,000 and $1.5 million to build new, or upgrade existing trade or vocational education and training facilities. It is a cross-sectoral trade training centre aimed to provide high level training in a variety of trades for senior school students at various local secondary colleges.
The students can access training in different trades at St John’s Regional College, Hampton Park Secondary College, or Hallam Senior Secondary College.
St. John’s Regional College will receive upgrade facilities to deliver the commercial cookery and patisserie course.
Hampton Park Secondary College will also receive upgrade facilities so students can participate in the competitive manufacturing/engineering (metals) course, which includes quality control in production and just-in-time manufacturing methods.
Funding will also allow Hallam Senior Secondary College to receive refurbishment and new workshops and training facilities aimed to enhance vocational education and training, which includes automotive, building and allied trades, and hair and beauty.
A new technology focus at Hallam Senior Secondary College will be on skills and training in the renewable energy sector.
