Cranbourne East mother of two Fran Rourke has taken part in a money-saving program with the Brotherhood of St Laurence, and says it has been a godsend.
The program, Saver Plus, assists families to plan ahead for the upcoming school year to help cover the many costs involved in sending children to school.
Parents are encouraged to put away a certain amount of money each week for about 12 months, and the Brotherhood of St Laurance matches that money dollar for dollar, up to $1000.
“I would be struggling now if I hadn’t joined the program,” Ms Rourke said.
“It has been amazing.”
Ms Rourke, a single parent, has two daughters who will attend Cranbourne Secondary College this year, Shannon in Year 8 and Gemma in Year 7.
“You’re looking at about $1200 to $1300 just to send them (children) off to school. There is no such thing as a free education.”
Ms Rourke said the extra cash she received through the Saver Plus program helped her cover the cost of text books, stationery and uniforms.
“I used to make all of their uniforms at primary school. Now I can’t do that.”
Ms Rourke said she would be able to consider sending her children to camps this year with the money she had saved.
“Now I can send them to these things instead of them missing out. It really does take that strain off.
“January is a really expensive time of the year and I’m on my own, which is a totally different ball game.”
As a requirement of the program, Ms Rourke attended money-saving and budgeting seminars to give her tips about how to save money from day-to-day. Ms Rourke said she would continue to save after the tips she gained through the course.
“It really helps you look at what you’re spending and recognise what you do and do not need. I’ve certainly done things differently this year.”
Gerard Brody from the Brotherhood of St Laurence who facilitates the Saver Plus program in Casey said now was the perfect time to consider joining the program.
“Many families find it difficult to afford educational costs in January after an expensive Christmas period,” Mr Brody said.
