Worthwhile to help others

– Bridget Brady
VOLUNTEERING has its ups and downs according to the City of Casey’s citizen of the year, but the Cannons Creek resident says it’s all worth it in the end.
Roman Nowak won the citizen of the year title at a special ceremony held on Australia Day evening.
“It was such a shock to the system. I did not expect this. I was happy just to be nominated,” he said.
Mr Nowak volunteers for the Cranbourne Salvation Army, and has done so for 13 years. He also volunteers with the Devon Meadows CFA and the Independent Persons Program, which supports young people.
“It was a big surprise (to win), I’m still lost for words…but for me everyone is equal. Some people get different opportunities than others.”
Mr Nowak said receiving accolades for his work was not why he volunteered so much of his time for the community. “I just enjoy what I do.”
Mr Nowak and his wife have cared for children as foster parents with Menzies Inc for 28 years.
“There are mixed emotions sometimes. Not everything runs smoothly, but you try your best.”
