VWFL – DIVISON 1 AND 3

ARCTIC conditions could not stop Endeavour Hills claiming a perfect 10 – its 10th win from 10 starts in the Victorian Women’s Football League.
Endeavour Hills continue to fire on all cylinders as the newly formed VWFL side continued its unbeaten streak – this week defeated Cranbourne at Casey Fields by 39 points.
The wet-weather played havoc with both sides ability to mark or generally control the play, but the Falcons were able to barrel their way through the stoppages.
Powering through the hard slog, the Falcons’ midfielders set up the forwards expertly as Siona Pilkington (3 goals) and Sarah Punton (2 goals) made the most of the superb performance by in-and-under centre workers.
Mopping up off half-back, best on field Rebecca Sherry showed she’s a class above while Ash Ladson, Georgia Punton and Maria Pickering also featured in the headliners.
“It’s an outstanding achievement,” Falcons coach Mark Haughton said.
“It was one of those games… just so bloody cold… we were picking it up out of the pack and dropping it cause the hands weren’t working.
“(The) amount of players Cranbourne threw around the ball… we kept ours outside, so we set up our clearance work and opened it up – transferred the ball to the middle a bit more.
“They were handling it really well… their set-up around congestion you could see them going in and getting around the pack.”
Haughton praised Hancock’s signature hard-edged efforts across the park while also calling attention to a smart day’s work for ruck Ash Seymour.
“Ash Seymour in the ruck just controlled every stoppage,” Haughton said.
“She’s a thinking ruck and very intelligent player and was working out to adjust to the game and basically controlled that area.
“It was a massive team effort though – everyone was switched on.”
One month separates the Falcons from a perfect home-and-away record – starting this weekend against Kew at home.
The coach puts it down to the positive attitude of the group and their ability to work together and produce the right results.
“Talking to them at the start of the year with how they wanted to run things – structure, relating to each other, supporting each other – and that’s been something we continue to work on, even at training,” Haughton said.
“The closeness of the girls is incredible, so we’ll just stick to our philosophy and make it work for the rest of the year.”
CRANBOURNE’S march up the VWFL Division-1 ladder continued even in the heavy deluge with a 42-point triumph over Eastern Devils.
An emphatic third quarter – led by Chloe McMillan (3 goals) and Kirsten Mcleod (2) – was enough to excise the Devils and give Cranbourne its seventh win in a row.
Sitting half-a-game off the top of the ladder, the Eagles head out to Darebin this weekend.
