WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE
AGONISINGLY close once again to taking their elusive first victory, Casey Comets couldn’t quite summon the right stuff against a high-flying Boroondara.
Playing in horrendous conditions on Sunday evening at the State Football Centre, the Comets sparked their season back to life with a confidence-boosting draw against the top-ranked Eagles.
The only thing getting into the net through the first half was rain as Rachel Binning and Laura Croft held firm the Comets’ efforts. Casey held on gallantly throughout the clash, making and squandering a few chances, but most importantly keeping the Eagles from cashing in and taking the easy win most would have expected in this lopsided WPL battle.
Mykaylin Rosenquist was the toast of Casey as she struck the Comets ahead in the 80th minute, but the Comets’ resolve was shattered in the dying minutes.
A long-bomb crushed Casey’s chances of an inaugural win and allowed the Eagles to save face by taking a point away from a forgettable performance.
The Comets now face South Yarra on Friday night and with six rounds remaining in the WPL season a couple of wins will be needed to avoid relegation.
NPL1 EAST
In NPL1, Dandenong City brought back the points following its regional road trip, knocking over Murray United 3-0.
City dictated the tempo against their country rivals, finding their way to the back of net via an early confidence builder from Ash Cattermole.
United looked for the reply desperately til the final minutes when two late nails in the coffin via Keegan Ziada and Alex Rojas destroyed any hopes of a hometown highlight.
Dandenong City sits fifth in NPL1 East and faces FC Bulleen Lions at home on Saturday.
STATE LEAGUES
The Comets SL1SE men’s side were knocked over by Mornington SC in a Friday night lights spectacular at Comets Stadium. Casey’s peninsula region rivals found the lead via Shane Tagliaferro and held on to raid the points and leave the Comets in ninth out of 12 with a 3-6-6 record.
Life was a little easier in State League 2 South East with Berwick City 2-0 victors over Old Scotch SC via perennial goalscorers Alpha Turay and Orlando Mejias. – Doveton SC – booting away 3-2 with similar efforts from its star strikers Farai Murwira and Phoenix Lawton – took the wins ahead of the run home. Berwick City sits second on the ladder and finds itself well in the running for promotion while Doveton is sixth and trails City by six points.
Berwick City versus South Springvale women was washed out.
