CASEY’S older drivers will be more confident on the road thanks to a new council safety initiative.
The Keeping Older Drivers Safe and Mobile program is a new road safety course designed to assist older drivers.
Run by the City of Casey in partnership with SafeRoads and Victoria Police, the program is designed to improve the skills of elderly drivers and increase their confidence on the road.
With more than 34,000 residents in Casey aged 55 and over, Casey CEO Mike Tyler said it was important for older residents to stay active in the community.
“Residents need to stay mobile as long as practical to sustain their contribution and to maintain their own sense of independence and wellbeing.
“It is also extremely important that we all recognise our limitations at various life stages,” Mr Tyler said.
Mr Tyler said the course was classroom based to discuss safety and driver issues in a relaxed environment.
He said participants discuss various options to improve driver safety, such as avoiding driving at night or at peak periods, having regular health checks and talking to their doctor or pharmacist about the possible effects of medical conditions and medicines on driving ability.
The program, developed by the Hawthorn Community Education Project, includes 10 courses with a maximum of 20 participants each.
Residents aged 60 years and over who are interested in attending a session can book through Jem Belcher on 9705 5200.
