GUN Devon Meadows all-rounder Matthew Hutchinson has stepped up to also coach the West Gippsland Cricket Association club in season 2015-16.
Hutchinson signed with the Panthers for the 2014-15 season and soon confirmed his reputation as one of the elite players in the WGCA, making the Country Week squad and being named Club Champion in a season in which he amassed 302 runs and claimed 23 wickets across all grades.
“I’m excited by the opportunity to coach the club,” said Hutchinson.
“Our results were pretty disappointing last season but I don’t think it reflected the talent within the club.
“With a big preseason under our belts I’m confident we’ll be thereabouts come finals’ time.”
Hutchinson has had previous coaching stints at Nyora, Endeavour Hills and Doveton, and according to club president Mick Floyd that experience will be important as the Panthers look to bounce back from a disappointing season in which their 1st XI finished sixth in the District division.
“Matt is an exceptionally talented cricketer with both bat and ball,” said Floyd.
“But one of his biggest assets is his will to win… he has a great feel for the game and is willing to do whatever he can to win for his team.
“It’s a trait that those who play alongside him admire and respect.
“Matt will be a fantastic coach for this playing group.”
Devon Meadows will start preseason training on Sunday, 16 August. Players interested in joining the Panthers for season 2015-16 should contact Mick Floyd on 0409 426 562 or email mickfloyd64@gmail.com.
