Musical mastery

THE music industry is competitive, but a government initiative might help struggling hopefuls get their foot in the door. The FReeZACentral mentoring program has done that for 25-year-old Hampton Park singer Vanessa Keren.
The program matches 50 young music industry hopefuls aged 18 to 25 with a mentor in their chosen field of performance, technical crafts, event management, marketing and promotion, or music business operations.
Ms Keren was paired with Australian songstress Monique Brumby in the performance category of the mentoring program last year.
“I found her to be extremely helpful and professional,” said Ms Keren. “I got a lot out of my meetings with Monique.”
Ms Keren said she was pleased with the educational as well as the entertainment aspects of the program. She learned new terms, information about instruments, and vocal techniques that helped her when recording a personal track at the Audrey Studios for the FReeZACentral CD.
“I was excited to discover a government initiative for the music industry,” she said. “It’s about time there was some kind of avenue to help kids get involved in music as a realistic career option, instead of just scaring their parents into thinking they would never have a job.”
