Heart attack pool emergency

By BRIDGET SCOTT

A 50-YEAR-OLD man with a previous medical condition remains in a critical condition after he suffered a heart attack while swimming laps at Casey RACE on Monday morning.
It is understood that the Lynbrook man, who it’s believed is a regular at the aquatic centre, was seen to be struggling by someone when he was in the pool around 10am on Monday 6 April.
Life savers on duty were notified and by the time they reached the man he was underwater.
A defibrillator was then used and staff commenced CPR on and continued this until paramedics and CFA crews arrived and took over.
Acting Senior Sergeant at Cranbourne Police Station Adam Mottershead said it was 21 minutes before they got a response from the man.
He said the man was then taken by ambulance to Monash Medical Centre in Clayton where the News believes he still remains in the Intensive Care Unit in a critical condition and is under sedation.
Act Sen Sgt Mottershead commended the staff at Casey RACE for their quick actions.
“Without the initial action by staff at the centre and their efforts, there is no way that the male would have had any chance of surviving,” he said.
“They did a fantastic job.”
