CRANBOURNE Turf Club’s first Sunday meeting was a success and the club expects crowds to improve every fortnight.
Racing stewards considered cancelling the meeting after a deluge of rain the days before the meeting.
However, no rain fell on Sunday. The rail was forced out nine metres after 21 millimetres of rain fell in the three days before the meeting.
The track rating was a heavy 10, and runners were working hard to stay on top of the track in the home straight.
Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge said the track was a genuine heavy but was very even and safe.
“The horses had to work hard but the track held up well,” he said.
“The crowd will improve with each Sunday meeting.”
The next Sunday meeting is scheduled for 17 August
